Campbell allegedly assaulted a police officer during his arrest

He was arrested at his Phoenix home on Monday after a witness reported seeing his silver BMW slam into a Toyota.

Mr Campbell was also held on suspicion of aggravated assault for allegedly kneeing a police officer in the thigh, said police in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mr Campbell, 67, who posted $2,000 bail, has had hits such as Rhinestone Cowboy and Wichita Lineman.

Campbell's son, Shannon, 18, asked people to pray for his father, who has admitted difficulties with alcohol in the past.

"That's what alcohol addiction can do to people," said Shannon.

"People should pray for him and any other people who have the same problem."

Mr Campbell was arrested on suspicion of extreme drunken driving and hit and run, said Sergeant Randy Force, a Phoenix police spokesman.

The alleged aggravated assault incident on a police officer was said to have taken place while at Phoenix's Madison Street Jail, Sgt Force added.

He said at times the singer had been variously combative and aggressive, and congenial - and was heard to be singing as he was being dealt with.

Police said the incident began at about 1700 local time (0000 GMT) when Campbell's silver BMW car slammed into a white Toyota at a Phoenix intersection and carried on.

A witness followed Campbell's car as he called authorities on his cell phone.

Campbell was confronted at his home at the Biltmore Estates in an affluent district of Phoenix.

"By his appearance and demeanour and the strong alcohol on his breath, he was taken into custody," said Sgt Force.

The singer has spent more than 40 years in the entertainment industry, recording 27 top 10 hits such as By The Time I Get To Phoenix and Galveston.

He recently released a box set of his songs and is known for his CBS musical variety series The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.

Shannon Campbell said incidents did not happen often with his father, whose official website said he had given up alcohol and smoking cigarettes.
