Stewart also said he was upset that the press attacked him for his relationship with a younger woman - but did not do the same with Sir Paul McCartney.

The star told the Radio Times it may be because of the knighthood, "a wonderful little honour to be bestowed on one".

He also said he was mystified why he had never been honoured by the Queen.

"I do my bit for charity. Maybe it will come along - the OBE: Ordered Out Of the British Empire," he said.

Stewart was promoting a musical based on his music, Tonight's the Night, which has its gala premi�re in London on Tuesday.

He also has two albums in the UK top 20.

Stewart called Sir Elton by his nickname, Sharon, and said: "She doesn't invite me to any of her dos, the miserable bugger.

'Upset'

"Perhaps she doesn't want competition. My hair is nice and real and looks it, and hers doesn't.

"No, I take that back. He looks good at the moment, but he could lose a bit of timber."

Stewart, 58, is currently dating model Penny Lancaster - 26 years his junior.

"I'm not upset by what people say, except when it's personal," he said.

'Kill me'

He was troubled by the fact that "they never have a go at Paul McCartney for marrying a younger woman", he said.

"He's 60 and Heather is 34, but they kill me because of Penny."

And he was "astounded" that he had never won a prestigious Grammy award - but "they tend not to give it to the British unless you're Sting... Mr Serious who helps the Indians".
