Williams is trying to gain a US audience

The star collaborated on the track with composer Hans Zimmer, who won an best original score Oscar for The Lion King and also wrote the music for Gladiator.

The inclusion of Williams on the soundtrack could help boost his profile in the US, where Atkinson's last film Bean was a big hit.

Johnny English, a James Bond-type spoof, also stars singer and actress Natalie Imbruglia, marking her return to acting since her days in Australian soap Neighbours.

In the film, released on 11 April, Atkinson plays an accident-prone MI6 agent on a mission to rescue Britain's crown jewels and save the monarchy from a French business tyrant.

It is the second time Williams has recorded a movie soundtrack for the producers Working Title, having previously sung Have You Met Miss Jones? from Bridget Jones's Diary.

Working Title's music supervisor, Nick Angel, said: "Robbie was particularly excited about writing a theme song about the character in the movie rather than a song whose lyrics have little relevance to the film in question.

"The collaboration between Robbie and Hans was highly successful."

Zimmer's distinguished career has seen him nominated for six Oscars for movie scores including Gladiator, The Thin Red Line and As Good As It Gets.
