| Wednesday, 29 January, 2003, 13:37 GMT Sarandon makes premire war plea ![]() Sarandon (left) and Goldie Hawn star in the new film Actress Susan Sarandon has used the UK premire of her latest film to criticise Prime Minister Tony Blair's relationship with United States President George Bush. The star, who has been an outspoken critic of US and UK policy towards Iraq, said she could not understand why Blair was appearing to back Bush in threatening war.
"I'm tired of being labelled anti-American because I ask questions," she said at the premire. She has previously appeared in a play about 11 September, and voiced her opposition to "military expansion". In London, she said: "What's happened to Blair? I don't understand his reasoning or his logic. I don't understand his evolution.
In the TV commercial, she talked about Americans returning "in body bags" and was seen in front of an image of a cemetery in Normandy, France. The advert closed with an image of a fireball and the words ''Win Without War". She told reporters in London it was "just me posing some questions that I think that everybody has and that hasn't been sufficiently answered about something that is as massive as a war". Sarandon, who starred in Thelma and Louise and Dead Man Walking, has been one of the most high-profile US celebrities to speak out against military action. The 56-year-old can currently be seen in three films - including The Banger Sisters, released in the UK on Friday, in which she joins forces with Goldie Hawn as ageing rock groupies. She also appears in romantic drama Moonlight Mile alongside Dustin Hoffman and Jake Gyllenhaal, which is out in the UK on 21 February. She can also be seen in the US playing the cruel mother of a troubled teenager in Igby Goes Down. |
