Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon was among 219 people arrested in New York following protests after the killing of an unarmed immigrant.

She was arrested at the demonstration at the city's police headquarters on as civil disobedience protests continued over the killing of the 22-year-old Amadou Diallo.

He was hit by bullets fired by four police officers at his home in the Bronx home in February.

She said: "If we're not here today then we're saying that what happened is acceptable and normal and I think that does a disservice to the other police.

Including Sarandon, 821 people have been arrested since protests began on 9 March.

They have been released after receiving summons for disorderly behaviour.

It was reported on Friday morning that four officers had been charged with second-degree murder.

Advance sales to see her in Amy's View have rocketed past the �2.5m mark - out-grossing Nicole Kidman's recent appearance in The Blue Room.

"I've never seen ticket sales quite like this," said a theatre spokesman.

Dame Judi, 64, who won Best Supporting Actress for Shakespeare in Love, will star in the play for a 14-week run.

Actress Winona Ryder had to be rushed to hospital after slipping on fake blood on the set of her latest movie.

The 27-year-old, whose busy filming schedule prohibited her from accompanying boyfriend Matt Damon to the Oscars, injured her knee.

The accident happened on the Pennsylvania set of Girl Interrupted. The film is an adaptation of Susanna Kaysen's harrowing memoir.

Actress Cameron Diaz is in secret negotiations to star in a film version of the cult TV show Charlie's Angels, it has been reported.

The 26-year-old, who was head-hunted for the role by fellow actress Drew Barrymore, will receive at least �3m for playing detective Sabrina Duncan.

Barrymore, 24, has been signed to play Jill Munroe in the new version of the all-girl trio, while veteran actor Jon Voight's daughter, Angelina Jolie, will star as Kelly Garrett.

Director George Lucas has donated �1m to create a new digital studio at his old college, the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television.

The facility will be named after the Japanese film legend Akira Kurosawa. "Kurosawa was one of film's true greats," said the Star Wars supremo.

"This way, we pay tribute to him while at the same time inspiring students to break new ground the way he did.

Meanwhile, A �5m expo featuring new characters, costumes and a spaceship used in the new Star Wars film Episode One: The Phantom Menace is coming to Britain.

Star Wars: The Power Of Myth gets its world premiere at the Manchester Evening News Arena on 24 June.

It features seven different zoned areas, including an area where Darth Vader and his Imperial Stormtroopers hold a laser shoot-out.

Flat Eric is out-selling his nearest rival by nearly 2-1 in the race to claim this weekend's number one spot.

The yellow glove puppet, who stars in the latest Levi's ad, has helped Mr Oizo to sell 122,000 copies of the song, Flat Beat, already this week.

His nearest rival is Danish group The Cartoons, who have sold 66,000 copies of novelty song Witch Doctor.

The top four are all likely to be new entries, for only the second time in the chart's history.
