Elvis Costello, Coldplay, Robbie Williams and Sir Paul McCartney are among the UK artists challenging US stars for Grammy glory at this year's awards.

Nominations have also gone to David Bowie, Daniel Bedingfield and Craig David.

Costello leads the charge with three nominations - but two groups who are little-known at home but have found success across the Atlantic are also in the leading pack.

Dirty Vegas, who found success in the US when their music was used in a car advert, have three nominations, as do south London R&B duo Floetry.

They will battle the likes of Eminem, Bruce Springsteen and Avril Lavigne, who head the nominations with five each.

Costello has received nominations for best rock album and best male rock vocal for his recent album When I Was Cruel.

His US-only compilation of live tracks and B-sides, Cruel Smile, is up for the best alternative music album prize.

Coldplay are also up for best alternative music album, and are on the shortlist for best group vocal rock performance.

Dirty Vegas: Up for best dance recording

Robbie Williams, who has yet to make it big in the US, has just one nomination - for best long music video, for the recording of his performance at London's Royal Albert Hall in October 2001.

A number of categories are dominated by UK stars.

On the list for best male pop vocal, Craig David's 7 Days - a number one in the UK 29 months ago - is named alongside Sting's Fragile and Sir Elton John's Original Sin.

On the male rock vocal shortlist, four out of five artists are from the UK - Costello plus David Bowie, Peter Gabriel and Robert Plant. They are joined by Springsteen.

And on the list for best dance recording, UK chart-topper Daniel Bedingfield's Gotta Get Thru This is named with tracks by Groove Armada and Dirty Vegas.

Dirty Vegas, a trio from Kent and the south London suburbs, are also up for best recording package and best video.

The other surprise act, Floetry, are up for best urban/alternative performance in the R&B section, best R&B song and best contemporary R&B album.

Among more established UK stars, Sir Paul McCartney gets a mention for the song he wrote for Tom Cruise's blockbuster Vanilla Sky.

Ex-Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant has a second nomination for best rock album for his acclaimed recent release Dreamland.

And The Clash documentary Westway To The World is named in the category for best long video, while multi-media group 1 Giant Leap have nominations in both video categories.
