Norah Jones: Shot to fame in 2002

Jones, the 23-year-old daughter of Indian maestro Ravi Shankar, is one of eight artists to be nominated for five prizes.

Eminem, Springsteen, rapper Nelly, rock singer Avril Lavigne, R&B star Ashanti, pop favourite Sheryl Crow and "neo-soul" artist Raphael Saadiq also received five nominations apiece.

Jones was one of the surprise stars of 2002 with her jazz and blues torch songs on her debut album, Come Away With Me, which has sold 2.7 million copies in the United States.

The album, which also touches on country, pop and folk with Jones playing piano and providing sultry vocals, is nominated for the prestigious best album award.

It will battle Eminem, Springsteen, Nelly and country group the Dixie Chicks for that prize.

In the shortlist for record of the year, Jones' Don't Know Why is up against tracks by Eminem, Nelly, Nickelback and Vanessa Carlton.

Another major category, song of the year, sees tracks by Lavigne, Springsteen, Carlton and country musician Alan Jackson shortlisted, together with a tune written for Jones.

Jones is also up for the best pop vocal album prize as well as the award for best newcomer, where she will face stiff competition from Lavigne, Ashanti, rising pop vocalist Michelle Branch and singer songwriter John Mayer.

Eminem features prominently after his two recent albums, The Eminem Show and the 8 Mile Soundtrack, were among the best-selling CDs of 2002.

He is up for best rap album, best male rap solo performance and best video on top of his record of the year and album of the year nods.

Springsteen's recognition follows the release of The Rising, his most popular album since 1984's Born in the USA.

Big time

It has earned him nominations for best rock album, best rock song and best male rock vocal performance.

Also with five nominations, Nelly has hit the big time thanks to his latest album, Nellyville, which was the second biggest-seller of 2002 in the US.

Canadian singer Lavigne, 18, combines skate-punk attitude with pop songs to produce worldwide hits like Complicated - which is up for best pop vocal performance as well as best song.

Sheryl Crow makes it onto the list for her latest album, C'mon, C'mon, and Ashanti is included after impressing with her self-titled debut.

Glittering launch

The final artist to get five nominations is producer and musician Raphael Saadiq, whose blend of R&B and soul on his Instant Vintage CD is on the best R&B album shortlist.

This year's nominations were announced by stars including P Diddy, Lavigne, Justin Timberlake and Nelly at New York's Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

There are 104 categories - up from 101 last year - and the awards will be handed out on 23 February.
