| Wednesday, 23 October, 2002, 11:39 GMT 12:39 UK Moyles is 'most irritating' DJ ![]() Afternoon "saviour": BBC Radio 1's Chris Moyles Motormouth radio presenter Chris Moyles is Britain's most irritating DJ, a survey has claimed. The poll - conducted to promote a mobile phone service - said listeners did not like the way he waffled instead of naming the records he played. Joint runners-up in the poll were his BBC Radio 1 colleague Sara Cox and Radio 2's Terry Wogan, who both host breakfast shows. Chris Tarrant - of London station Capital FM - comes in at fourth, closely followed by Jonathan Ross from Radio 2. Zoe Ball, who now broadcasts on London-based Xfm, and Radio 2's Steve Wright were also named in the poll.
Some 1,000 voters were given a list of questions, including one which asked which DJs they felt neglected to name tunes. It was an open question, with no list of DJs given. Chris Moyles got 15% of the vote. Jingle-playing and constant chat at the expense of playing music were also named as a major annoyance. Wake-up call Playing music that listeners did not like was another irritant - the third most common - and many said shows did not have enough news coverage. The poll is published the day before the radio industry reveals its official quarterly listening figures. A spokesman for Shazam - which claims to be able to name records played down the phone - said the survey should act as a wake-up call to DJs. Marketing director Vijay Solanki - who used to work at Capital FM - said: "I know from personal experience that radio presenters can have an annoying habit of not telling you about the music they have just played." But Radio 1 was not impressed, branding the survey a "cheap publicity stunt". "Chris's programme is the biggest in the country so he must be doing something right," a spokesman added. What do you think? Has Chris Moyles been unfairly criticised? What makes a good DJ? Who is your favourite - or least favourite - and why? | See also: 23 Oct 02 | TV and Radio 25 Sep 02 | TV and Radio 23 Sep 02 | Reviews 19 Aug 02 | Music 29 Aug 02 | TV and Radio Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top TV and Radio stories now: Links to more TV and Radio stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
