Get Me Out Of Here has raised 618,799 for charity, with winner DJ Tony Blackburn amassing 184,000 for the National Autistic Society. The figures were announced on an ITV show reuniting the contestants, who recently survived together in the Australian jungle for several days, before being voted off one by one by television viewers. Money was raised for charity through the cost of phoning and texting the show. The programme's hosts, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, had to carry out a bush tucker trial on Saturday's show - a challenge which had already been meted out to many of the celebrities. The public voted for Ant and Dec to dip their hands into "hell holes" filled with cockroaches, meal worms, tiger salamanders and marine toads, to retrieve stars worth 1,000 each for charity.
Boxer Nigel Benn apologised to "my Christian brothers and sisters" and the public for "acting the complete jerk out there", referring to his arguments with comic Rhona Cameron. He added: "If I was Rhona I would have knocked me out." Cameron, who had described Blackburn as "a bit slow", tried to clarify this by saying: "I meant dreamy." But the DJ said he was "too slow" to have worked out what she meant.
Singer Darren Day embraced "It Girl" Tara Palmer-Tomkinson at the end of the programme in an apparent reconciliation, after the two fell out during their jungle stay. Palmer-Tomkinson admitted she had been "absolutely smitten" with Day, and that she had passed him a love-note in the hotel before they arrived in the jungle. But Day paid tribute to his girlfriend Adele Vellacott, who was in the audience for the show, saying: "I thought my lady handled the whole situation with great grace and dignity." Blackburn, who beat the "It Girl" in the final, with 55% of the votes, added that he kept his cool during the arguments because "I didn't want to let my family down". "Being older it does give you a certain maturity," he added. | See also: 06 Sep 02 | Entertainment 09 Sep 02 | Entertainment 06 Sep 02 | Entertainment 06 Sep 02 | Entertainment 30 Aug 02 | Newsmakers Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
