| Sunday, 1 September, 2002, 15:39 GMT 16:39 UK Posh gives birth to second son ![]() David Beckham: "We're delighted" Victoria Beckham has given birth to a baby boy at London's Portland Hospital. The boy, delivered by Caesarean section at 0940 BST on Sunday, is to be named Romeo. Romeo, who arrived weighing 7lb 4oz, is the former Spice Girl's second child with her husband David.
"You're always nervous having children but it's the most beautiful thing in the world, so we're both delighted," he said. Victoria was sitting up in bed doing well following the birth, he said, adding that "gorgeous" baby Romeo looked like his older brother Brooklyn. "He's got Brooklyn's nose and Victoria's chin," he said. "He's beautiful." 'Celebrate' The England and Manchester United football star told reporters 28-year-old Victoria was "fine, she's great". Explaining their choice of name, he said: "It's just a name we love." "Brooklyn's just in awe of him. Brooklyn came in when Romeo came out - he absolutely adores him." Asked if three more children could make a Beckham five-a-side team, he said: "We'll work at that in a few months, maybe."
Victoria and David, 27, arrived at the exclusive hospital with Brooklyn at about 0730 BST on Sunday. Victoria's mother Jackie and sister Louise came in another vehicle, and later in the morning David Beckham's parents, Ted and Sandra, also arrived, accompanied by Victoria's father, Tony Adams. Proud grandfather Ted Beckham said he was "over the moon" at becoming a grandfather again. Asked whether his grandsons would inherit their father's footballing skills, he added: "With my coaching and David's coaching he should have a good little side there." He admitted he would be toasting the new arrival in the traditional way. "I'll have a drink later on and celebrate," he said. Doctor's orders The Beckhams are reported to have booked a suite of rooms at the hospital for several nights. A spokeswoman for the couple said the Caesarean procedure was not elective surgery and had been carried out under doctor's orders. Some reports suggested Victoria had opted for a Caesarean instead of a natural birth because of her husband's busy football schedule. But the spokeswoman said: "Because Brooklyn was a breech birth, she had to have a Caesarean section.
The singer was expected to be in hospital for several days and the couple were now in the process of informing their friends and colleagues of the birth, she added. Brooklyn Beckham was born by Caesarean in March 1999 at the same private hospital after doctors found he was in the wrong position. The three-year-old was named after the area of New York where he was conceived, leading to speculation about what the new arrival could be called. Speculation On a recent shopping trip Brooklyn reportedly told store staff his mother was going to have a girl and she would be named Paris. Victoria was unable to fly out to be with her husband for the later stages of England's summer World Cup campaign because of her pregnancy. Bookmakers William Hill spent most of last week refusing requests for a bet on the name Romeo, according to spokesman Graham Sharpe. He said: "We had a number of people asking for a price but it was just too near the birth so we had the sense to turn them all down. "So we're quite happy and we will start laying bets at 250-1 that Romeo will play for England." |
