Elvis Presley's ex-wife Priscilla has unveiled plans to turn her romance with The King into a musical.

The actress, who met the late singer at the age of 14, announced plans for the show to coincide with the upcoming 25th anniversary of Presley's death on 16 August.

She has teamed up with Immortal Entertainment to put the couple's turbulent relationship to music.

The as-yet-untitled musical is expected to run along similar lines as the smash hit Mamma Mia!, which is based around the songs of Abba.

But it is not yet known whether the production company will be able to include any of Presley's original music.

"It's a celebration of the music from that period. It may include some Elvis music, it may not, depending on resolution of copyright issues," said a spokeswoman.

The Presley show will chart the singer's love life through the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

"This is going to be Priscilla's vision. It's her story. It's the king and the queen. It's the birth of rock and roll," said Immortal president David Codikow.

The company plans to begin a nationwide hunt for actors to take the lead parts of Elvis and Priscilla.

Mr Codikow said it could take up to 14 months for the show to actually reach the stage.

Elvis Presley met Priscilla, the daughter of a military man who served in Germany at the same time as Presley, when she was just 14.

She moved into Presley's Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, and continued going to high school.

The pair eventually married in Las Vegas in 1967 as she reached the age of 21.

Presley died on 16 August 1977

They went on to have a daughter, Lisa Marie, who was married to pop superstar Michael Jackson for 20 months.

But the Presleys' relationship was a rocky one and following allegations of infidelity and drug abuse they divorced in 1973.

Priscilla Presley went on to make a name for herself as an actress, landing leading roles in the Naked Gun comedies.

Immortal Entertainment produces various live shows and touring events, including the stage version of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, featuring music from the 2000 film.
