Men in Black II: Your views
Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith
The men in black are back
The sequel to 1997's hugely successful film Men In Black reunites the alien-busting cops played by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones for another mission to save the planet.

This time, the enemy is alien seductress Serleena, played by Lara Flynn Boyle and Smith finds himself a love interest in Rosario Dawson.

"If anything the film lacks the freshness and spark of the original MIB. Essentially it recycles a successful formula for what will doubtless be a summer hit," said BBC News Online's Alf Hermida.

But what do you think?

Is it a match for the original? Are they right to stick to the first film's winning formula?

Have your say

Men in Black was excellent. The sequal was a total waste of time. Only the dog was funny. I wouldn't even encourage people to watch MIIB when it finally gets to terrestial TV.
Joanne, UK

Not as good as the first, but then again, most sequels aren't. Some parts were amusing, and I definitely wasn't bored, but for people seeking true comedy this summer, go see Austin Powers 3.
Ed Hokes, Wales

Sequel but not equal , try to catch an afternoon show or DVD instead.
Zoe, UK

This movie was dire. The best bit in the film was the end credits - what a waste of money - the original MiB was much much better
Neil, Scotland

Phaslett, Australia

Merely an extension of the last film, Men in Black 2 lacked a plot, originality or any decent jokes. I wasn't expecting much from a Hollywood sequel and I was disapointed.
Helen , England

I thought the original was brilliant, I absolutely love Tommy Lee Jones. Clearly the writers have spent the last four years sat on their hands. The plot was rubbish with a capital R. The super cool black boys are far more deserving that this.
Andy, Wales

I thought the CGI looked fantastic, but I think this will go the same way as Ghostbusters II. Overall, It was really good but not a patch on the first one.
Mike, UK

"Sequel but not equal" applies here. The magic of the first film wasn't here, the story was pretty bad, like something out of a cheesy 1950s B-movie. Typical Hollywood recycled, rehashed, summer garbage movie.
Jarkko, Moscow,Russia

Yet again Hollywoord producers insult filmgoers with a cynical re-hash of a successful formula. No doubt their lowest opinion of consumers' powers of discrimination will be vindicated at the box office. Tragic.
Tom, UK

It was great fun. The combination of the alien dog and the inimitable Tommy Lee Jones made the perfect sidekicks for Will Smith who had the best one-liners on the screen since James Bond.

The aliens were allowed to develop amusing characters instead of just surprising us with their strange abilities and appearances. We went to see it on a date and it was perfect.
Ben and Sarah, UK

Rubbish mostly, very few if any genuinely funny moments and a spent formula. The pug dog was good though.
Atif, Germany

This was certainly one of the most boring films I've seen. I hardly laughed or even smiled once. The actors were totally wasted in it.
Anne, USA

Although it made me laugh a few times it just wasn't as good as the first. This is one of those movies you leave feeling like "I could have waited for the DVD rental at Blockbuster and saved a couple of dollars".
David, USA

Even though the sequel is not as good as the original, those sausage-like aliens and their antics are enough a reason to see the film. Also, jackass is in there!
Adam, England

I saw it last night, and actually found it surprisingly funny. To be honest I found it funnier than Austin Powers 3 in parts; I certainly laughed more. The plot is a bit weak and pointless, but I don't think with this kind of film it's worth dwelling over something as obviously insignificant as the plot. Will Smith remains the king of cool in my opinion. I don't think they should bother with a third though.
Edward, England

Here we have yet another Hollywood attempt at entertainment. And it fails, the plot is pretty much the same. The special effects are better. And the name of the movie, Men In Black II. Can they not think up a more orignal name?
Clive, England

It doesn't just stick to the orginal formula, it virtually remakes the first film - sadly with dull and uneventful results.
Andrew, London

Glad to see the little guys are more involved this time. Would not want the public to think they just sat around, drank coffee and smoked!! Great to see the worms work. I always say, if it works and is funny, keep doing it. Great film.
Andrew Skinner, England

At only 88 minutes running time it's obvious that the producers are trying to cash in on the first film. They've struggled to find anything new and original for the sequel.
Steven McKenna, East Kilbride, Scotland

I liked the first one. Nothing too heavy, just a bit of fun, but the sequel seems to be the same old thing, just with Will Smith & Tommy Lee's role's reversed. Surely they could have come up with something a bit more original?
Pete, UK

Very poor. Special effects are ok if nothing special and occasionally looking rather cheap. Storyline is unimaginative and has a very poor ending. Will no doubt be a hit due to the two stars and people hoping for another dose of the original, and far superior, movie. If this is a success it most certainly does not deserve it. Avoid
Neil Hunt, UK

I saw this when I was visiting New York recently. I liked it, because it's chock-full of special effects, and I love special effects. There are a few funny moments. However, the script was badly put together, with the various bits of the film not meshing together very well. If you go in with low expectations, you'll probably find this an okay movie, but all the hype means I think most people will find it a disappointment.
Seldo, UK

It's one of those films that you try so hard to enjoy but it just fails miserably. The original was full of funny moments but this one... no.

If you've seen the trailer you've seen all the best gags.

And let's not even mention the CGI effects, they stink!
Bug, UK

I took my girlfriend to watch it and we both hated it. I'm lucky I'm still going out with her as I chose the film.
Matthieu Terrier, England

A waste of time! Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are totally wasted in this excuse for a sequel - where the talking dogs and aliens should get star billing. The few laughs there were only emphasised the boredom. Yawn!
Andrew, UK

Amusing but tedious, similar to the first one, Tommy Lee Jones just looks completely bored, Will Smith does make me smile though.
Ms S Sekhon, UK

MIB II is more like an episode of an ongoing TV series than a summer blockbuster. Having said that it's OK, but not as good as the original. If Smith and Jones do MIB 3, I would suggest that it comes out next year instead of having the gap they had between I & II. Either that or REALLY improve the writing. It could be that the series is like the Star Trek movies, except it's the odd-numbered ones that are good.
Paul T Horgan, UK

Very funny. Comparing this film with the first part I should say that it is one side of the same coin.
Alex, Moscow

The first MIB was great, but had a rough feel to it because they changed directors half-way through shooting. This second one was rushed into production before the script was finished to avoid the US actors strike. This showed, and neither film was as good as it could have been. Such a pity.
James, UK

Ok, so it's a sequel and as with most sequels the worst is to be expected, however not in this case. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole film and found it extremely funny. The plot isn't too mentally challenging which for someone like me is a good thing.

Both Will and Tommy are back in fine form and full credit should go to Simon Eves for a great musical score and selection of complimentary music. However I don't think Will's new record to accompany the film will do as well as the first. "Shake your head" I think not !
Jodie Hewitt, Croydon, UK

I saw it in Canada last month. It's a fun no-brainer. It is obviously less fresh than the first outing but worth C$12. But then, what did you expect? High art?
Steve, London, UK

And again, how to rip off people! This is the most boring film I've seen in recent months. The producers just don't deserve anyone to go and spend some money watching this. It is frankly terrible and not even funny. Please please stop thinking that "consumers" are only good to make you richer!
Greg, UK

An awful excuse for a film! I can't believe that these two successful actors agreed to appear in such a load of dross. The belly-laughs were few and far-between, most of the jokes just made you grimace and think "Yeah, we've seen that before". Go and see Euro Pudding instead, much funnier!
Tarquin, Luxembourg

After I watched this film I had decided that it was OK. Watchable but hardly memorable, unlike the first MiB which was superb. The more I think about it though, the more disappointed I have become over the lack of plot, lack of good jokes and in parts (Knoxville's second head) dodgy effects. All in all one to watch if you don't plan on comparing it with the first film or thinking about it too much.
Rob, UK

Basically a total rip-off, with a story-line hardly any different from the first. At only about 1hr 10mins makes me think it's a huge cash-in job against the punter. Save your money and don't bother!!
Justin, USA

Favourite bit: Michael Jackson's cameo appearance. Didn't realise the guy was so funny!
Christian Peterson, UK

You were never going to go and see this film for intellectual stimulation, and you were not going to go and see this film not knowing the subject matter. It was good entertainment - familiar characters and good humour. Anyone expecting any plot surprises must also have been disappointed when they saw Police Academy 5 (!!)
Clare, UK

I liked MIB II. I laughed more at this one than the first. I thought the first was a bit dire, however the story was more structured than the second. More imaginative aliens in MIB II. Ending was corny though! It's a kids film really hence the talking and singing dog to keep them focused. Flynn Boyle was pretty evil - good role for her and Will and Tommy are good together.Overall I rated the second film than than the first. "Who let the dogs out?"
Caroline Hemingway, UK

Wow, I am so dissappointed to hear all these guys say how awful the film was. I'm just glad I did not read this before we went to see it. We, two kids and mum and dad, went to see it on Saturday. We all laughed and thoroughly enjoyed it. Kids loved the dog, I thought Micheal Jackson was a scream, and well creased up over Will Smith's lines. I have to go back and see it again. It moves so fast, has so much in it to catch, I must have missed bits. The highlight? Coming out of the cinema and alien-spotting in the High Street..there's hundreds of them!
Sheila, England

Zzzzzzzzzz... what a complete waste of time. Well that's 88 minutes of my life gone, pity we can't ask for refunds like on DVDs. Is it me or is Hollywood more interested in making a visual effects movie than getting a decent script? Roll on the old days!
Andrew D, UK

Not as funny as the first one admittedly, but still one of the best films of this year so far. Infinitely better than Austin Powers 3, which really was a waste of money.
Jo Perrett, London, UK

The film is not clever or funny. Its humour is slapstick and obvious. The Austin Powers franchise reigns over all else this summer.
Alvin Otter, UK

The Times review says it all. Dry, boring, flat, awful. They used the original formula, and then spent their time deliberately making sure all the effects, jokes, lines and plot got as boring as possible. Please please please don't go.
Ed, UK

How can you criticise a film like this? It is designed to make the watcher go to the cinema, forget all their troubles and make sure that you get an hour and a half of mindless entertainment - and it has definitely succeeded. If you go to see the film in the right frame of mind, you will come out with aching sides and sore lips from laughing so hard like I did!! How can you go and see a film like this knowing what the content is going to be and then come onto a website like this and criticise it?? What planet are you living on - excuse the pun!!
Lorcan Drysdale, England

Saw it the day it came out in the USA, and must say that Frank the Pug had the best line of the whole movie. Now, is that sad or what?
Frances, USA

The special affects and especially Lara Flynn Boyles' part were impressive but essentially the film lacked a decent story and the ending was quite odd. I hope there will not be a III.
Stephanie, Germany

Rubbish, Will Smith must be cringing!
Susy, UK
