Road to Perdition sees Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Jude Law hook up for a family crime drama set in the 1930s.

This is the second movie from British director Sam Mendes, who won an Oscar for American Beauty in 2000.

The movie took $22m (14m) in its opening weekend but was playing in less than half the number of cinemas as Men in Black II.

Halloween returns

Dreamworks studio is rolling out the film at a slower pace than the usual big blockbusters because it is convinced its target audience of over-35s will not rush out on the first weekend to see a film.

Making its debut at number three was Matthew McConaughey's apocalyptic thriller, Reign of Fire, featuring a brood of dragons.
