The globe theme had been used in various ways since the channel launched in 1964.

BBC One Controller Lorraine Heggessey said the new clips were intended to capture "the new spirit" of BBC One and reflect its new, dynamic identity.

"Whatever your age, wherever you live and whoever you are, rhythm and movement are common to everyone. BBC One should have that same universal appeal," she said.

One ident features two people performing a spectacular Brazilian dance in front of the London skyline.

Others show salsa dancers filmed in Hertfordshire and ballet dancers on the Cornish coast.

There are also basketball players dancing to hip-hop music in wheelchairs, Welsh rugby players performing the Haka - a traditional Maori ceremony - and acrobats and tap dancers.

The new idents will replace the serene clips of balloons floating over cities and the countryside that have been on screen since 1997.

"I have shared viewers' enjoyment of the graceful progress of the balloon over British landmarks for the last five years, but it's time to move on and bring a fresh feel to the channel," Ms Heggessey said.

She revealed in January 2001 that she wanted to replace the balloons because they felt too slow and were not in touch with viewers.

The new idents will get their first airing on Good Friday.

They were made by the company that created the balloons as well as the original Channel 4 logo and Spitting Image, Lambie-Nairn.

More idents will be unveiled later this spring.
