| Tuesday, 26 March, 2002, 16:53 GMT Dancers replace BBC One globe ![]() The new clips will replace the hot air balloons The globe that has been the symbol of BBC One since the channel began in 1964 is being replaced by clips of dancers wearing red. The TV channel has unveiled eight clips, or "idents", which will replace the current scenes of hot air balloons with globe patterns that are seen as shows are introduced. The new clips feature people dressed in red - the colour of the channel's logo - in front of some of the UK's most stunning urban and natural settings.
BBC One Controller Lorraine Heggessey said the new clips were intended to capture "the new spirit" of BBC One and reflect its new, dynamic identity. "Whatever your age, wherever you live and whoever you are, rhythm and movement are common to everyone. BBC One should have that same universal appeal," she said. One ident features two people performing a spectacular Brazilian dance in front of the London skyline. Others show salsa dancers filmed in Hertfordshire and ballet dancers on the Cornish coast.
The new idents will replace the serene clips of balloons floating over cities and the countryside that have been on screen since 1997. "I have shared viewers' enjoyment of the graceful progress of the balloon over British landmarks for the last five years, but it's time to move on and bring a fresh feel to the channel," Ms Heggessey said.
The new idents will get their first airing on Good Friday. They were made by the company that created the balloons as well as the original Channel 4 logo and Spitting Image, Lambie-Nairn. More idents will be unveiled later this spring. |
