Huge volatility in energy prices has been acerbated by huge reliance in some markets on powerful suppliers. Russia for example has been accused of using energy as a political weapon.

The BBC's Simon Jack asks E.On chief executive Wulf Bernotat what can be done to make sure the lights stay on at a cost we can afford, and his thoughts on the problems President Obama is facing with the climate change aspect of his political agenda in the US.
