Morrisons boss Marc Bolland leaves post early

The chief executive of Morrisons, Marc Bolland, has left his post early, the supermarket has announced.

Mr Bolland will become the new chief executive of Marks and Spencer next year, but was due to remain in his Morrisons post until January.

But in a statement on Friday, the supermarket chain said he would "relinquish his responsibilities" with immediate effect.

It is not clear if Mr Bolland will take up his M&S role earlier than planned.

Sir Ian Gibson, Morrisons non-executive chairman, will take over as the chair of its executive board.

"Morrisons has a strong and capable senior management team which will continue to operate the business," Sir Ian said in a statement.

"We are well placed for a successful Christmas period."

Mr Bolland's appointment as M&S chief executive earlier this month came as a surprise to many industry observers.

It was welcomed by investors, however, who cited Mr Bolland's strong track record at Morrisons since he joined the company in 2006.
