Morrisons has announced that a record 10.8 million customers visited its stores in the three months to November.

Like-for-like sales excluding fuel and VAT at the UK's fourth-largest supermarket rose 4.3%. The company has opened 37 stores this year.

Morrisons said its sales "continued to grow well ahead of the market".

On Wednesday, it was announced that Morrisons chief executive Marc Bolland will leave next year to become the chief executive of Marks and Spencer.

The figures should be encouraging for whoever takes over from Mr Bolland, according to analysts.

"The incoming person at the helm will inherit a steady ship," said Richard Hunter, head of UK equities at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers

"The continuing focus on cost efficiencies, coupled with another surge in customer numbers, will serve the company well."
