Peter Mandelson has confirmed the UK government will "continue to financially underwrite" General Motors (GM) following the firm's decision to hang on to its European car unit Opel, including Vauxhall.

GM's decision has been welcomed in the UK but met with anger in Germany.

Lord Mandelson said that the UK plants had "a very strong contribution to make to the future" of the company.
