Electronic boost to China economy

In an effort to get thrifty Chinese to spend more money, Beijing has extended subsidies to farmers buying electronics goods. The government pays 13% cent of the retail price for washing machines, computers and refrigerators.

Official figures show rural electronics purchases surged 70% in March. But is the programme really a success?
