The number of people in the UK who had their homes repossessed reached a 14-year high in 2009 but declined in 2010.

Annual repossessions since 1990

The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) said the number of repossessions had dropped by 24% to 36,300 in 2010.

However the CML forecast that in 2011 the position would become worse, with 40,000 repossessions and 180,000 arrears cases by the end of the year.

Quarterly insolvency since 2006

The number of individuals becoming insolvent reached a fresh high point in 2010, according to the Insolvency Service.

In England and Wales, 135,089 people were declared insolvent last year.

That was 0.7% more than in 2009 and the highest number since modern records began in 1960.

Annual insolvencies since 2001

In 2010 there was also a 23% fall in the number of companies being declared insolvent.
