AMD saw a big rise in revenues |
The latest losses at chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) were not as extensive as market expectations, thanks to surging sales of laptops. AMD said its net losses for the three months to 30 September totalled $396m (194m), compared with a profit of $136m for the same period last year.
Its revenues rose 23%, again from a year earlier, to $1.63bn, led by a 43% rise in sales of its laptop chips.
Analysts said AMD was recovering from its recent price war with rival Intel.
At the end of last year, both firms extensively cut prices in an attempt to boost their market share, significantly reducing the profits at each company.
Analyst Joanne Feeney of FTN Midwest Securities said AMD was now "moving in the right direction".
