Price battle causes losses at AMD

AMD and Intel are locked in a fierce battle that is hurting them both
Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has reported a bigger-than-expected loss, as its ongoing price battle with market leader Intel takes its toll.

AMD made a net loss of $611m (305m) in the first three months of 2007, compared with a profit of $185m in the first quarter of last year.

The world's second-largest maker of computer microchips behind Intel, AMD said its revenues fell 7.4% to $1.23bn.

Intel has also been hit by the price war, with its latest revenues down 1%.

AMD admitted its results were "unacceptable".

Analysts said Intel has been better able to withstand the fall in chip prices because it has more cash than its smaller rival and because its market share is nearly 16 times larger.
