Ferrovial profit triples in 2006

For the first time, most of Ferrovial's revenue came from outside Spain
Grupo Ferrovial, the Spanish building company that spent 10.3bn buying the British airport operator BAA, has reported its profits tripled in 2006.

Net income came in at 1.43bn euros ($1.88bn; 960m), compared with 416m euros in 2005.

The figures were boosted by the 766m-euro gain from the sale of its property division to Grupo Habitat.

Spain's builders have been using the proceeds from the country's housing boom to diversify into other areas.

About 12% of Spanish workers are employed in the construction industry, which is Europe's biggest market for cement.

Ferrovial also owns the UK engineer Amey, Indiana Road Toll and the airport services provider Swissport.
