British Energy is looking for new partners
British Energy has seen its profits for the last three months of 2006 increase, thanks to higher electricity prices.

The nuclear power firm saw net profits rise to 360m for the quarter ended 31 December, up from 173m a year earlier.

The rise came despite power output being hit by technical difficulties at several plants, the firm said.

The results come as the firm plans plant investment and major repairs, and is set to invite potential partners for new nuclear generation projects.

'Operational improvement'

If the government confirms its support for new nuclear projects as part of the energy White Paper, to be published next month, proposals would be selected soon afterwards British Energy said.

The firm said "investment in plant projects, major repairs and strategic spares is targeted to sustain and improve operational performance and improve the prospects for life extension".

Total investment in plant projects, major repairs and strategic repairs in the three months reached 213m, up from 170m in the same period a year before.

Despite the profit rise, shares in the firm dropped 2.2% in early trade.
