Construction trade woos graduates
Building site
The campaign is backed by some leading industry names
The construction industry has launched a 1m campaign to encourage graduates to consider a career in building.

The industry's leading trade body CITB is offering 60 packages to students, providing them with funds of up to 9,000 to support them at university.

As part of the drive it is hoped to increase the number of women entering the industry, with adverts put into changing rooms in High Street stores.

The CITB said the construction industry was changing.

Employee shortage

Julian Humphries, the organisation's recruitment and career's business manager, said: "We would ask that people think about construction and inquire about construction, as there are hundreds of jobs suitable for all.

"They include things like architecture, and not just the trades you normally associate with the industry."

As well as placing ads in stores, the campaign will also run on television and in trade magazines.

The scheme is sponsored by employers such as Amec Group, Arup, Balfour Beatty, Mowlem and Persimmon, who have provided match funding to the 500,000 contributed by CITB ConstructionSkills.

The move comes after recent figures showed up to 430,000 employees are required by 2010 to keep pace with Britain's spiralling building demands.
