Easyjet passenger traffic soars

Mr Haji-Ioannou's latest ventures have yet to match the success of Easyjet
Luton-based low-cost airline Easyjet said on Monday that its January passenger numbers rose 23.8% compared with a year ago.

But it added that it continued to expect tough competition.

The airline said it carried 2.083 million passengers last month, up from 1.68 million in January, 2004.

Easyjet, founded by Greek entrepreneur Stelios Haji-Ioannou, said its load factor - the percentage of seats filled - was 76.4% in January, down 0.8%.

Its unaudited revenue rose 18.7% to �1,163m in January 2005, up from �980m in 2004.
