First Choice drops Costa Brava

First Choice has axed Costa Brava from its 2005 summer brochures
Spain's Costa Brava, the area that launched the package holiday phenomenon, has been dropped by a leading holiday company.

First Choice has axed the region from its summer 2005 programme.

The company says the decision is down to 'destination fatigue' and a lack of adequate hotels.

Cosmos is among a number of other holiday companies considering its position on the region, which lies on Spain's north eastern coast.

First Choice product director, Tim Williamson, said: "Our sales have declined to the Costa Brava.

"We have not been able to secure the price or quality on beds, so we will not be flying there from summer 2005."

He also urged Spain to provide "something different or great value".

Bookings are almost 25% down this year compared with the same time in 2003.

The decline has been blamed on soaring prices, the strengthening euro and the rise of low-cost airlines.

Other tour operators are also reducing capacity to Spain next summer, with Cosmos axing Ibiza from its 2005 summer brochures and Club 18-30 dropping Benidorm.
