Northern produces Goodfella's Pizzas and Dalepak frozen foods
Northern Foods is to quit its business in Ireland as it refocuses on faster growing operations in the UK.

The British group has sold its Irish division to a new company formed by Barry's Tea and Bank of Scotland for 95m euros (66.8m).

Hull-based Northern produces own-label meals for retailers such as Marks & Spencer in the UK.

The Irish arm of Northern owns food and drink company Batchelors and food importing group Beck Smith.

UK future

The division also distributes household brands including Green Giant, Fox's Biscuits and Old El Paso on behalf of other manufacturers.

Northern said proceeds from the sale would be used to pay down the company's debt.

It is ditching non-core businesses in a bid to focus on core brands in the UK market such as Goodfella's Pizzas and Dalepak frozen foods.

Finance director Sean Christie said: "This disposal continues our programme of adjusting Northern's portfolio of activities to align the group ever more closely with some of the fastest growing sectors of the UK food market."
