About 30,000 dock workers have ended a strike at Bangladesh's largest port, after authorities backed down over hiring non-union employees.

Last week the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) decided to hire non-unionised workers, after accusing labour groups of striking too often and providing incompetent workers.

The CPA reversed their decision after talks with strikers.

The one-day stoppage brought the port to a standstill, disrupting the loading and unloading of 48 domestic and foreign ships.

Chittagong Port handles 80% of Bangladesh's exports and imports.

Trade unions are also unhappy about plans for a US firm to build a $500m (�342m) private container terminal near the Chittagong Port.

If Stevedoring Services of America (SSA) is given the go-ahead to build the terminal, it would become Bangladesh's largest foreign investment project.

The High Court has blocked the project over accusations that the government did not put the deal out to open tender.

Trade unions fear the new terminal will cause thousands of job cuts.
