Cannabis catch for HK angler

It was a big haul for the police, too
An angler in Hong Kong made a record haul of sorts when he landed a package of cannabis worth thousands of dollars on a night-time fishing trip.

The 20-year-old man had dropped his line off a pier in Kowloon when it became hooked on a heavy object.

Reeling it in, he found himself with a 15-kilo (33-pound) bag of the drug, which police believe may have been abandoned by smugglers.

The cannabis was soaking wet but would still be worth an estimated 1.35 million Hong Kong dollars (US$173,000) when dried out, police said.

They are now checking the bag and plastic wrappings for fingerprints in the belief that smugglers may have hurled it into the sea before being intercepted by marine police.

According to official figures, 827 kilos of cannabis were seized in the Chinese territory in 2002 compared to 2,105 kilos in 2001.
