Singapore is hoping to spice up its nightlife

A public advisory board has recommended that bars stay open around the clock and that the government ease restrictions on dancing in bars, the Straits Times newspaper reported.

Most bars and night clubs currently close at 0300 and dancing is confined to a dance floor at least one metre high and away from tables and chairs.

Sources told the paper that the government was likely to accept the advisory panel's recommendations. The city state is trying to shake off its straight-laced reputation.

Singapore's struggling economy would welcome more tourists. The state is also trying to boost its birth rate. Last month, to coincide with Valentine's Day, the Singaporean Government launched a campaign to get Singaporeans in the mood, complete with tips for dating.

At least one bar owner welcomed the proposals.

"There will be more spontaneity and this will add more life to the nightlife here and help to boost tourism," Dennis Foos, chairman of the Devils Bar on Orchard Road told the paper.

The advisory panel also wants entertainers to be allowed to mingle freely with the crowd.

Next month, the government is also set to unveil the first review of its infamously fierce censorship laws in 10 years.
