The American president, Barack Obama, has said the US wants to strengthen its alliance with Japan.
Speaking with the Japanese prime minister, Taro Aso - the first foreign leader to visit him at the White House, Mr Obama said that the relationship between the two countries was crucial to security in the East Asian region.
