US to boost troops in Afghanistan

President Barack Obama has authorised the deployment of 17,000 extra US troops to Afghanistan to "meet urgent security needs".

Mr Obama has vowed to focus US military efforts on fighting the Taleban in Afghanistan, rather than on Iraq, where the additional troops were originally scheduled to go.
