US President-elect Barack Obama has said he is appalled and disappointed after police arrested Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich on charges that he tried to "sell" Mr Obama's Senate seat.

He denied ever having spoken to the governor on the subject and said he was "confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals related to this seat".

Mr Obama also said that he hoped Governor Blagojevich would offer to resign.
