South Africa's unease as Sharpville massacre marked

South Africans are preparing to commemorate the anniversary of one of the bloodiest moments in the fight against apartheid, the Sharpville massacre.

It is 50 years since police gunned down demonstrators who had gathered to protest at the use of passbooks, or "dompas", that every black South African was expected to carry and produce on demand.

But there is criticism that the government has failed to improve the lives of many people who live in the run-down township today.
