| Saturday, 31 August, 2002, 18:49 GMT 19:49 UK In pictures: Summit protest march Thousands of demonstrators have marched to the venue of the World Development Summit in Johannesburg, to publicise issues ranging from poverty and Aids to globalisation and war. ![]() The march began in the shanty township of Alexandra and ended at the summit venue ![]() Police presence was high along the route ![]() Many of the estimated 10,000 marchers dressed up for the occasion ![]() Along the route they sang and chanted: "People united will never be defeated" ![]() Some protesters carried banners condemning the US ![]() Supporters also came to rally for the rights of Palestinians ![]() Members of South Africa's Landless People's Movement were out in force, campaigning for jobs and land ![]() Some of them criticised South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki, who was at another rally ![]() Meanwhile, about 1,000 Zulu workers held a separate march in Johannesburg, saying their living conditions were "inhuman" |
