The UK still has the highest prison rate among the 15 countries that formed the EU before it expanded in 2004.

However, it now comes eighth behind the Baltic states, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

Cyprus is the lowest in the EU with 50 people in prison per 100,000 of the population.
