Supporters of longer hours say they will bring England and Wales in line with Europe and allow "grown-up" drinking.

Britons are not among Europe's biggest drinkers in terms of overall amount consumed, but hours were some of the most restricted.

As in much of Europe, licensees in England and Wales can vary their hours if they get permission.
