Martial law

In December 1981, General Wojciech Jaruzelski, now prime minister, declared martial law. Armoured vehicles were used to put down escalating riots.

Some 10,000 opposition activists were jailed and dozens were killed in clashes with police.

Mr Jaruzelski, now 78, says Solidarity left him no choice if Poland was to avoid a much bloodier crackdown by Soviet forces.
