British women, like those across the developed world, are having fewer children.

The government estimates the rate will settle at 1.74 children per woman, known as the Total Fertility Rate.

To maintain a steady population, each woman would have to have 2.1 children - enough to replace herself and the father and allow for some childhood mortality.
