More than 3.5m people live in the hectic suburban sprawl of Soweto. Homes are anything from corrugated iron shacks to two-storey mansions.

Many heroes of the fight against apartheid lived in Soweto, including Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

They turned Soweto into an international symbol of freedom from oppression.
