  • On 20 March, explosions rocked the Iraqi capital, signalling the start of the US-led war. The city came under sustained air attacks throughout the conflict
  • US forces moved north through Iraq from Kuwait, fighting their way into Baghdad's international airport on the night of 3 April
  • After controlling the airport, troops then began their push for the city
  • As US marines moved in from the south-east, the 3rd infantry division staged a raid through the south-west part of the city on 5 April, before massing outside it and pressing forward
  • Forces raided Saddam Hussein's main palace on 7 April, before launching an assault on key government buildings a day later
  • Baghdad finally fell on 9 April
