| Saturday, 28 March, 1998, 03:46 GMT Brits sink at Oscars Dame Judi: Mrs Brown left feeling blue Britain has failed to go to the Full Monty at the Oscars ceremony after only winning one of the awards.
The surprise of the evening was none of the four Brits up for the best actress award was chosen by the Academy. As the Titanic turned iceberg and holed almost all of the opposition, Kate Winslet missed out on the best actress award for her role in the $1bn grossing movie. Fellow actresses Julie Christie, Judi Dench and Helena Bonham-Carter also failed to pick up the award which went to the US's Helen Hunt for As Good as it Gets. Accepting her award, a gushing Helen Hunt said: "The first time I saw Mrs Brown, and I saw it three times, I leaned over to my beloved and said, 'She's (Judi Dench) going to win an Academy Award. And in my mind tonight she has."
Minnie Driver, up for best supporting actress in Good Will Hunting, also fell foul of the Americans when the Oscar was handed to Kim Basinger for her sultry siren performance in LA Confidential. Accepting her award, Anne Dudley, said: "It's been amazing being part of the success of the Full Monty over the last year." |
