Perejil statement in full
Morocco's Foreign Minister Mohamed Benaissa and his Spanish counterpart Ana Palacio
There was heavy media coverage of the talks
Morocco's Foreign Minister Mohamed Benaissa held talks with his Spanish counterpart, Ana Palacio, to finalise a US-brokered deal over a disputed Mediterranean island.

The following is the text of their statement as carried by the Spanish news agency Efe.

The foreign ministers of the Kingdom of Spain and of the Kingdom of Morocco have officially confirmed the agreement to restore and maintain the situation regarding the island of Perejil/Tourah [also known as Leila] which existed prior to [11] July 2002, as it was interpreted by US Secretary of State Colin Powell on 20 July 2002.

The actions of both sides on this matter will not prejudice their respective positions regarding the status of the island.

Both sides will apply this understanding in good faith.

Both sides have also agreed to begin a frank and sincere dialogue with the aim of reinforcing bilateral relations.

To this end, the two ministers have decided to meet in Madrid in September 2002.
