Ceremonies have been held in Mumbai (Bombay) to mark the first anniversary of a series of devastating militant attacks on the Indian city a year ago.
Police took part in a parade through the city, displaying the force's newly acquired equipment, including amphibious patrol boats and special "rapid intervention" vehicles.
Candle-lit prayer services have been held at places that were targeted during the attacks, including one of the city's smartest hotels.
Flags were waved in a show of patriotic pride outside the Taj Mahal hotel, targeted during the attacks.
In southern Mumbai, diplomats and local faith leaders attended a service at a synagogue, and also lit candles in memory of the victims.
Residents daubed messages and painted tributes on the city's walls, urging the city to survive and thrive.
People stopped to remember the victims of the attacks across the country.
Back in Mumbai, Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram (centre) unveiled a new memorial, which he dedicated to the memories of "those who laid down their lives to save Mumbai".
And after night fell, there was another candle lighting ceremony at the Gateway to India, not far from the Taj Mahal Hotel.
