The head of the UN mission in Afghanistan, Kai Eide, has spoken out to deny allegations that he had personally down played the level of fraud in Afghanistan's presidential elections.

Peter Galbraith, who made the original claims, was removed from his post because of the row.

Speaking at a news conference, Mr Eide acknowledged that there had been "significant fraud".
