Michel Fourniret has confessed to some of the killings |
Belgian police have found what are thought to be the remains of one victim of self-confessed French serial killer Michel Fourniret. Police launched a new search in woods close to the French border where some of the remains of 13-year-old Manayna Thumpong were found in March 2002.
She had disappeared in France nearly a year earlier.
Michel Fourniret, 63, is suspected of killing up to 20 people, mostly young women, in France and Belgium.
He has admitted to some of the killings, including that of Manayna Thumpong, and has been formally charged with eight.
He was arrested in Belgium in June 2003.
Police say they will now ask for DNA tests to be carried out on the remains to confirm they are Manayna's, AFP news agency reports.
The search comes a few days ahead of a reconstruction of Manayna's murder due to take place next week.
The authorities hope to conclude their investigation by the end of July to ensure Fourniret's trial takes place early next year in France, Belgian media report.
