French killer faces more claims
Monique Olivier
Monique Olivier is herself in custody
The wife of self-confessed French serial killer Michel Fourniret has accused him of eight more murders, prosecutors say.

It raises the number of murders Monique Olivier alleges her 63-year-old husband to have committed to 20, mainly girls.

Fourniret has confessed to two killings in Belgium and eight in France, but denies the latest allegations.

Ms Olivier, 56, is herself in custody in Dinant, Belgium, accused of being an accomplice to Fourniret's crimes.

On 17 February, Ms Olivier accused Fourniret of killing three girls the couple had employed as baby-sitters.

"She has now gone back on that statement, saying that instead of three, there were two baby-sitters," said Belgian senior prosecutor Arnoud d'Aspremont Lynden.

"Moreover, she has given statements relating to six other girls," he said. "These are relatively vague statements that we are verifying."

Investigation

Fourniret, 63, a carpenter who is also detained in Dinant, was arrested in Belgium in June 2003.

He has been charged with two murders in Belgium and is under investigation for the deaths of six girls in France.

His wife has accused him of 12 other murders, committed in Belgium and France between 1987 and 2001.

Fourniret has confessed to eight murders but denies the latest allegations.
