Gallery for graffiti artists opens in Cardiff

Organisers want to make 'legitimate grafffiti' more accessible

A dedicated graffiti and street art gallery is opening, allowing creators to display and sell their work.

The Boiler House in Cardiff will also stage regular workshops for the public to have a go.

With indoor and outdoor wall space, studio, shop and cafe the intention is to hold monthly exhibitions featuring local and national artists.

Artist Bryce Davies said the aim was to make legitimate graffiti more accessible to the public.

The Cardiff-based arts collective Peaceful Progress has funded the venture in an old boiler house off Andrews Road in Llandaff North.

Mr Davies said: "We are looking to give a platform to graffiti artists to come and paint, exhibit and sell their work to the wider public.

He said it was also a chance for the public to "experience the positive side of graffiti" and a chance to possibly "beak down barriers" surrounding the art form.

Mr Davies said there would be regular workshops and classes and monthly "graffiti jams" for people to go along and paint.

The gallery is being officially opened at 1230 GMT with various events throughout the afternoon and evening.

Peaceful Progress, founded by Mr Davies in 2000, was behind the Fair Play Festival held in Canton in 2008 and 2009.

It also runs monthly "Dub in the Pub" nights at the Lansdowne pub and the group tour the festival circuit throughout the summer with the "Peaceful Progress Graffiti Tent".
