The Green Party in Northern Ireland gained its first Northern Ireland Assembly member in 2007 when Brian Wilson was elected in North Down. In the 2009 European Election, Steven Agnew gained more than 3% of the vote, more than three times the Green Party's previous poll result. The Green Party works in cooperation with other Greens across the European Union, and has a close relationship with its counterpart in the Republic of Ireland. It is fielding four candidates in the general election. NORTH DOWN Steven Agnew joined the party in 2003 during its campaign against the invasion of Iraq. Mr Agnew was the party's candidate in last year's European election. He worked in homeless hostels for five years before quitting to become research officer for Green Party MLA Brian Wilson. He has appeared as a singer for a local band called the Killing Spree and has starred in a film made by a friend which has yet to be released. This is his first general election. SOUTH BELFAST Adam McGibbon is a post-graduate politics student at Queen's University Belfast. Mr McGibbon was elected vice-president of the university's students union earlier this year. He was a founding member of the Green Party's branch at Queen's. This is his first general election. SOUTH DOWN Cadogan Enright joined the Green Party in the mid-1990s. He was co-opted onto Down District Council in 2007. He is a member of the Strangford Lough Management Committee, Down District Policing Partnership, Lecale Environmentalist Society and the Sustainable Energy Association. He is a chartered accountant by profession and this is his first general election. STRANGFORD Barbara Haig worked for 16 years at the Harland and Wolff shipyard followed by 24 years in the voluntary sector. Born and raised in Belfast, Ms Haig has lived in the Strangford area for 30 years and and is a member of several conservation groups and animal welfare organisations. This is her first general election.
